This dataset includes 2,405,917 tweet ids for tweets related to Marielle Franco that were sent between 2021-03-06 and 2021-03-18. Marielle Franco was a Brazilian politician, sociologist, feminist, socialist, and human rights activist. She was an open critic of police brutality and extrajudicial killings. On March 14, 2018 she was killed in her car after giving a speech north of Rio de Janeiro. In March 2019 two former police officers were arrested for the murder. On the anniversary of her death in 2021 Twitter users were remembering her life.
In order to determine what to keywords and hashtags to collect an initial sample of 6500 tweets matching "Marielle Franco" sent between 2021-03-04 and 2021-03-21 was collected. 7 of the top 10 hashtags used in these tweets were used along with her name to collect data from Twitter's Search API (2021-03-06 - 2021-03-12) and from the Streaming API (2021-03-12 - 2021-03-18). The API query included any tweet that mentioned: "marielle franco", Quemmandoumatarmarielle, 8m2021, Mariellefranco, Mariellepresente, 12marzo, Whorderedtheassassinationof, Felizdiadamulher.
The data was collected as part of a collaboration between Alejandra Josiowicz at Rio de Janeiro State University and Ed Summers at the University of Maryland.
